Martin "Marty" C. Crotty is the founding Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Threshold Power.
Crotty began his career in the United States Navy where he served as a nuclear power plant operator for five years followed by progressively challenging operations and maintenance positions in waste-to-energy for Ogden Martin Systems including the role of Plant Manager at Hennepin Energy Resource Company in Minneapolis MN.
In 1999 Crotty became Director of Regional Operations for NRG Energy Inc. where he was ultimately responsible for the operations and maintenance of seven geographically and technologically diverse power plants totaling 3000 MW. Crotty’s leadership role included participation in due diligence processes, power purchase agreement negotiations, labor relations, and mergers and acquisition activities.
Crotty transitioned to wind power in 2002 when he assumed the role of Executive Vice President of Asset Management for SeaWest Windpower Inc., a developer, owner and operator of wind energy generating assets. During Crotty’s tenure at SeaWest he was part of the senior management team that was responsible for tripling the value of the company in preparation for a successful sale. Crotty expanded the company’s business by developing and marketing an operations and maintenance business for third-party wind project owners. Under Crotty’s leadership the company was awarded five contracts for third-party O&M.
Following the successful sale of SeaWest to AES Corporation in 2005 Crotty took on the role of Managing Director, Wind Asset Management and in 2008, President of Wind Generation at AES. In this role, he was responsible for P&L including operating assets and business development. During his tenure, Crotty led efforts to transition 525 MW of projects from development to operation and 756 MW from development to construction.
In 2010 Crotty became Chief Executive Officer of UpWind Solutions, the wind industry’s leading third party provider of asset management operations and maintenance services. Crotty was responsible for setting the strategic vision and business plan for the company. During this time as CEO, UpWind doubled its year-over-year sales and added business units for Parts and Major Maintenance Solutions.
Crotty began collaborating with founder Susan Nickey in 2011 on the strategy for Threshold Power. The company is committed to generating shareholder value through best-in-class asset and financial management, and a dedication to innovation and proven technology adoption across its operations.
Crotty earned a Bachelor of Science from New York’s New School and a Master of Engineering Management in Environmental and Energy Management from George Washington University. Crotty also participated in Executive Leadership and Development programs at the University of Minnesota, Cornell University and the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Crotty served as the O&M Advisor to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) Board of Director and was also served as the Co-Chair of AWEA’s O&M Working Group. He enjoys surfing, rock climbing, and bicycling.
