Susan D. Nickey is the founder and CEO of Threshold Power.
Nickey has played a central leadership role in several start-up environments that have grown into robust and successful businesses. She was a key leader in Acciona Energy’s entry into the North American market. Much of the task of building the company’s U.S. and Canadian presence was managed by Nickey. Under her leadership, the company developed, financed, owns and operates more than 750 megawatts of renewable energy. During her tenure Acciona also built, and now operates, the company's first wind turbine assembly plant outside of Spain.
Nickey began her career at ABN AMRO Bank as Vice President of Project Finance and in 1994 formed her own financial advisory firm, Carr, Nickey & Company, that provided entrepreneurs in the energy space with business and financial strategies. She advised investment banking clients on project finance in the renewable energy sector.
In 2001, Nickey joined Mesirow Financial as Managing Director of Investment Banking in its Project Finance Group. At Mesirow, Nickey was a recognized leader in renewable energy project finance initiatives and served on the Governor of Nevada’s Temporary Renewable Energy Development (TRED) Program Task Force. Nickey provided investment banking advisory services to the energy, water and infrastructure sectors including work on behalf of Acciona Solar Power. For Acciona, Nickey led efforts to structure financing and negotiate power purchase agreements for Acciona’s groundbreaking Nevada Solar One concentrated solar power project. This work led to Nickey’s appointment in 2007 as CFO for Acciona’s aggressive North American expansion.
At Acciona, Nickey’s leadership expanded beyond her role as CFO as she became a sought after speaker and thought leader on the subject of renewable energy finance. Nickey served on the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) Leadership Council and the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) Legislative and Finance Committee. During her tenure at Acciona, Nickey negotiated and closed over US$1 billion in financing endeavors, including US$380 million of tax equity investments.
During Nickey’s time at Acciona she was the subject of a profile in CFO Magazine and was named one of Women’s eNews’ 21 Leaders for the 21st Century for her leadership in sustainable development.
Nickey left ACCIONA in 2010 and joined the Board of Directors of BlueScout Technologies Inc. while also working on what would become Threshold Power. Nickey maintains a unique vision for Threshold Power - that clean energy investment, ownership and operation can be more competitive, more profitable and can operate better than the status quo. The company is committed to creating value through best-in-class asset, operational and financial management while remaining dedicated to the value-added and creative application of expertise across its operations.
Nickey earned a Bachelors of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and a Masters Degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. She is fluent in French and enjoys running, skiing, yoga and music.
